Hunter x Hunter (2011)

Quietly takes shonen apart. Its Nen power rules are airtight, and its darkest arc (Chimera Ant) is studied as some of the genre's best writing.

Synopsis
The Anime Lad

A cheerful boy leaves his island to chase the father who abandoned him for the world's most dangerous profession. Licensed Hunters get access to everything forbidden, which explains why the licensing exam kills people. The power system runs on rules the show actually respects, the villains have inner lives, and the friendly adventure keeps trading pieces of its innocence for better writing. It never announces the turn. One day you notice the water's boiling.

Super Eyepatch Fox

A boy's father left him to join the world's deadliest profession. The boy follows. The exam kills applicants. His best friend is a twelve-year-old assassin. The rules of power are airtight. The villains are people. Then comes an arc so dark the genre still studies it.

Gigguku

Do not let the art style fool you, this cute adventure show about a boy finding his dad grows into the sharpest, most vicious thing in shonen and it does it right in front of you. The power system is so well built that fights turn into debates where the smarter argument draws blood. And the Chimera Ant arc is the single best sustained stretch of writing this medium has, I'll say nothing else about it. I finished it and just sat there. Couldn't tell you for how long.

Father's Basement

Bright colors, cheerful music, a boy with a fishing rod, I had one foot out the door. Stay. The exam arc already has teeth, the assassin best friend is the tell, and by the midpoint it's running the coldest, most deliberate writing in shonen under a Saturday-morning palette. The villains will make you argue ethics with yourself. Nothing else in the genre commits to consequences like this. It earned every one of my retractions.
