Synopsis
A devoted reader finds herself living as Myne, a sickly young girl in a medieval world. Books exist, but they are luxuries reserved for the elite. Purchasing one is therefore not a serious plan. Myne responds by becoming obsessed with making things and finding another route to reading. Her family has noticed a sudden increase in project proposals.
Myne carries a reader's obsession into the body of a frail child. Her new world has books, but ordinary families cannot own them. She cannot solve that with strength or status, so she turns toward invention. Ascendance of a Bookworm frames its fantasy goal around access: reach the object she loves in a society built to keep it expensive.
Myne wakes up surrounded by fantasy and cares about one thing: where are the books? The answer is awful. They are rare, expensive, and far beyond her family's reach. I love the stubborn scale of her response. She is physically fragile and socially powerless, yet her hunger to read keeps turning every limitation into a problem she wants to work on.
A modern consciousness in a medieval world usually comes with suspiciously convenient competence. Myne gets a harsher starting point. She is sickly, poor, and shut out of the books she values. Her urge to invent grows from that concrete deprivation. The premise works because knowledge alone does not erase her body's limits or the class system around literacy.
