Hanamichi Sakuragi enters Shohoku High after fifty romantic rejections and with a reputation that keeps classmates cautious. Haruko Akagi approaches without fear and asks whether he likes basketball. Sakuragi likes Haruko, so he immediately claims he loves the sport. The statement leads directly to a gym and several details he did not research.

Sakuragi is tall, red-haired, and known as a delinquent. Haruko asks whether he likes basketball. He says yes because he likes her. She takes him to the Shohoku gym and introduces the slam dunk. Skilled freshman Rukawa gives Sakuragi an immediate comparison he did not request.

Sakuragi has been rejected fifty times, so when Haruko asks whether he likes basketball, he answers with total fraudulent confidence. She takes him straight to the gym. Now this enormous freshman has to face a real sport and a talented classmate while protecting an ego that arrived long before any understanding of the rules!

Sakuragi begins as a shouting delinquent whose basketball enthusiasm is entirely borrowed from his attraction to Haruko. The premise wisely puts that boast in a gym almost immediately. His height and confidence create an impressive silhouette, but Rukawa offers a reminder that actual ability exists nearby.
