Synopsis

Kyoto is home to humans, tengu, and shapeshifting tanuki. Yasaburo is the third son of the Shimogamo tanuki family, and his days involve family obligations alongside encounters with members of the city’s other supernatural communities. The ability to take another form has done little to simplify anyone’s relationships.

Humans share Kyoto with tengu and tanuki. Yasaburo belongs to the Shimogamo family and can change shape, moving through a city where supernatural life is part of the local order. He tends to an old tengu and deals with rival tanuki while remaining tied to his relatives. Mythology becomes neighborhood life rather than a distant legend.

This premise fills Kyoto with whole communities hiding in plain sight! Humans occupy the city alongside tengu and shapeshifting tanuki, while Yasaburo moves between them as the third Shimogamo son. The magic feels immediate because it comes attached to relatives and obligations. Changing shape may open possibilities, but it does not free anyone from family.
