Haruka cares about swimming with the focus normally reserved for oxygen. When former teammates reconnect and Rin challenges him, reviving Iwatobi High's swim club becomes the practical response. This requires enough members and a reason to compete. Friendship has therefore produced lane assignments and paperwork. The series treats the arrangement with suspicious sincerity.

Haruka's attachment to water meets Rin's open challenge, while rebuilding the school team forces old friends into the same orbit again. The swimming focus keeps the drama from floating on personalities alone.

The story revolves around Haruka Nanase, a boy who has always loved to be immersed in water, and to swim in it. Before graduating from elementary school, he participated in a swimming tournament along with his fellow swimming club members, Makoto Tachibana, Nagisa Hazuki, and Rin Matsuoka.
