When Marnie Was There
✦Studio Ghibli follows an isolated young artist whose seaside summer changes after she befriends the mysterious Marnie.
Synopsis
Anna is a quiet young girl whose asthma prompts a summer stay with relatives in a small town near the sea. She spends her days sketching and exploring. An apparently abandoned mansion called the Marsh House catches her attention, followed by a mysterious girl named Marnie. The prescribed quiet summer develops additional requirements.
Anna leaves for the countryside in hopes that cleaner air will help her asthma. She sketches the seaside landscape and discovers the Marsh House, an old mansion that appears empty. There she meets Marnie, whose open manner begins drawing the isolated girl into an unexpected summer friendship.
Anna keeps the world at a distance until a seaside mansion and the lively Marnie give her somewhere new to look. Their friendship begins while Anna is staying in the countryside for her health, spending quiet days with her sketchbook. The emotional pull comes from watching guarded attention slowly make room for another person.
A mysterious girl near an apparently abandoned mansion signals a familiar kind of secret. When Marnie Was There keeps the stronger focus on Anna, an isolated child sent to the countryside because of her asthma. Her sketching makes observation part of the character, while Marnie's warmth gives that careful distance something worth crossing.
