GANGSTA. centers on two adult fixers in the crime-ridden city of Ergastulum, using Nicolas's deafness as an integral part of communication and action staging.

Synopsis

The Anime Lad

Nicolas and Worick work as fixers in Ergastulum. Criminals and police hire them for assignments nobody respectable will touch. Their partnership is already worn-in when a routine gang problem lands at the door. The city responds to violence as a municipal service with inconsistent office hours and unusually flexible procurement standards.

Super Eyepatch Fox

Ergastulum survives through crooked arrangements, and Nicolas and Worick are the fixers called when those arrangements break. One fights with a sword and communicates partly through sign. The other handles clients with practiced ease. Their first job introduces a city divided by criminal power, where every favor carries local weight.

Gigguku

GANGSTA. wastes no time making Nicolas and Worick feel like they have survived years of awful jobs together. Their dry banter comes from totally different forms of competence. Ergastulum looks permanently stained by somebody's bad deal. I love how signing is built into the rhythm of scenes instead of presented as a special lesson.

Father's Basement

Ergastulum is assembled from well-used crime-fiction parts, right down to compromised cops and territorial gangs. The distinction comes from its leads. Worick's easy social mask plays well against Nicolas's blunt presence, while signed dialogue shapes how scenes move. The opening violence is harsh, but the adult perspective keeps it from feeling like adolescent posing.
