Synopsis

The Anime Lad

In a world where most people have superpowers, a boy born without one wants to be the top hero anyway. Crying is his cardio. Then the number one hero on the planet picks him as a successor and enrolls him in a hero academy, where classes are field exercises with casualties and the teachers are celebrities with day jobs. It wears its comic-book influences on both sleeves. When the big moments arrive, they hit exactly as hard as intended, which is annoying to admit.

Super Eyepatch Fox

Eighty percent of humanity has powers. He has none. Then the world's strongest hero hands him his power, and using it snaps him like a glow stick. Hero school, rivals, villains who think society made them. The kid keeps standing up.

Gigguku

A whole society built on superpowers and the story gives the best one to the kid who had nothing, what a premise. Yes it's a school shonen with tournament arcs, and yes, when it counts, I'm on my feet. The class is huge and half of them deserve their own show. When this thing lands a finishing move with the music going, I understand why people fall in love with anime. It recruits people. I've personally watched it happen.

Father's Basement

It borrows so loudly from western comics and classic shonen that you can see every seam. Powerless kid, chosen one, hero school, tournament. I had the review pre-written. Then it earns its big moments so completely that the pre-written review died in drafts. The cracks in its hero society turn out to be the actual story, and a couple of episodes are as good as this genre gets. I showed up to sneer and ran out of material.
