The Anime Lad
In 2019 Neo-Tokyo, teenage biker Kaneda leads his gang through streets crowded with rival riders and public unrest. A collision during one run draws his friend Tetsuo into a secret military program concerned with psychic phenomena. Kaneda begins pushing into territory guarded by soldiers and scientists. The city was unstable before the teenagers arrived, which saves them considerable setup work.

Neo-Tokyo burns with traffic lights and protest signs. Kaneda's biker gang tears through it until an encounter with a strange child brings the military down on them. Tetsuo is taken into a classified program. Kaneda refuses to stay outside. Engines roar against a city built from secrets and concrete.

The film cuts a sprawling manga into two hours, so motives and institutions can arrive half-explained. That compression also gives it frightening momentum. Kaneda's biker crew collides with a covert psychic program amid a Neo-Tokyo already strained by protests and military authority. Even when the exposition blurs, the physical storytelling stays exact. Steel bends with weight while purposeful crowds make every street feel occupied.
