Toradora!
Romance · Comedy · Arts · Slice of Life
✦The template for the modern anime rom-com, arguably where the tsundere archetype was most sharply defined.
Synopsis
Ryuuji Takasu is a gentle homebody cursed with a face classmates read as criminal. Taiga Aisaka is feared at school and privately infatuated with his best friend. When he reveals a crush on hers, they form a mutual-assistance pact. Their romantic strategy mostly involves entering each other’s homes and making preventable scenes.
A meticulous boy with an intimidating face learns that the school’s fiercest girl likes his best friend. He likes hers. They exchange information and form an alliance. Her wooden sword meets his practical planning. Public reputations keep getting in the way of two already unreliable romance strategies.
Ryuuji and Taiga begin as accomplices chasing separate crushes, which means every school day now has two terrible planners interfering with it. He brings patience and practical sense. She brings a wooden sword and limitless commitment. Toradora finds its energy in that mismatch while letting home life reveal what their fearsome reputations leave out.
The wooden-sword aggression and tsundere slapstick show their age, especially when Taiga's anger substitutes for a punchline. The series gets better whenever it studies the gap between reputation and home life. Ryuuji's supposed menace hides patient care, while Taiga's fearsome image collapses around basic loneliness. Their alliance works because each sees the other's unguarded routine.
