Fullmetal Alchemist became appointment viewing and soon pulled a huge audience beyond existing manga fans. Planetes grew into the thoughtful favorite, while Gungrave overcame a rough first impression and R.O.D -THE TV- gave action fans another reason this season felt unusually deep.
