Asobi Asobase - workshop of fun -

A middle school pastime club uses delicate character designs as misdirection for aggressive facial animation and vocal performances that turn small games feral.

Synopsis
The Anime Lad

Olivia was born and raised in Japan but cannot speak English. Serious Kasumi cannot speak it either. Hanako would like to become a normal popular girl. The three establish a club for games and diversions. Their qualifications for uncomplicated fun remain under active review. The meeting begins anyway.

Super Eyepatch Fox

Put three middle schoolers in a clubroom. Give Olivia no useful English, Kasumi an intellectual pose, and Hanako an urgent desire to seem normal. Begin with simple games. Let sweet character designs buckle under aggressive faces and louder performances. The pastime club escalates what should stay harmless.

Gigguku

It looks like three sweet girls enjoying gentle school activities for approximately one breath. Olivia, Kasumi, and Hanako form a club that should be harmless. Then the faces mutate and the voices attack every quiet expectation. Their smallest games get treated like emergencies, which turns one plain clubroom into a complete comic demolition site!

Father's Basement

Surreal school comedy often mistakes loud reactions for escalation, and Asobi Asobase is certainly loud. The bare club setup helps. Olivia cannot support the assumptions people make about her English, Kasumi projects seriousness, and Hanako wants ordinary popularity. Their mismatched self-images give the vocal performances something more specific than noise to attack.
