Surreal school comedy often mistakes loud reactions for escalation, and Asobi Asobase is certainly loud. The bare club setup helps. Olivia cannot support the assumptions people make about her English, Kasumi projects seriousness, and Hanako wants ordinary popularity. Their mismatched self-images give the vocal performances something more specific than noise to attack.
