A city of magical nobles separating worth by blood is hardly subtle worldbuilding. Still, Melida's position gives the prejudice a clear target, and Kufa's role as both instructor and secret evaluator creates useful tension. He is supposed to measure whether she can awaken mana, while she treats his arrival as a rare chance to improve. The strongest early material keeps the focus on effort under surveillance.
