Detective Kohachi Inugami visits a remote village to examine a series of animal deaths. His most useful guide is Kabane, a neglected boy treated as an inconvenience by nearly everyone around him. The clues point toward supernatural forces, while Kabane's own nature raises another question. It is fieldwork conducted under unusually poor child-welfare standards.
