The Anime Lad
Kotaro moves into a ramshackle apartment building without an adult companion. Next door lives Karino, a broke manga artist whose own life is hardly organized. Their introduction begins an unusual friendship, and other adult residents gradually enter Kotaro’s orbit. The youngest tenant appears capable. The building nevertheless develops an informal interest in his welfare.

A child living alone could become a blunt device for manufacturing sympathy. Kotaro Lives Alone works better when it focuses on the adults’ uncertainty. Karino is a broke manga artist, not a ready-made guardian, and the other residents carry their own limitations. Their concern develops through ordinary contact rather than sudden sainthood.
