Will Serfort studies at an academy where magic determines status and the likelihood of receiving basic respect. He cannot cast a spell. He can, however, wield a sword with uncommon skill and refuses to abandon his goal. Faculty opinions remain divided on whether competence counts when performed with the incorrect equipment.

Wistoria survives the familiarity by making Will's alternative skill concrete. He is not good at the approved test. He studies hard and relies on swordsmanship in a system built to dismiss it. The precise action makes that argument more effectively than the dialogue.
