Martial artist Ranma Saotome arrives at the Tendo dojo and learns that his father has arranged an engagement to Akane. Neither participant displays the requested enthusiasm. Both are capable of answering an argument physically, while their parents continue treating the match as settled. The household becomes an inefficient venue for romance and an excellent venue for property damage.

Father's Basement
An arranged engagement imposed by meddling fathers is old romantic-comedy machinery. Ranma1/2 keeps it moving by making Ranma and Akane equally capable of resisting each other. Their martial skill turns household conflict into slapstick, while the crowded family setting ensures that no disagreement remains private or manageable for long.
