In an alternate 1996, Japan is divided and an immense tower rises across the strait in Union-controlled Hokkaido. Hiroki and Takuya spend their free time building an aircraft, hoping to reach it someday. Their classmate Sayuri becomes part of that promise. Adolescence proceeds beneath a structure visible across a political border, which keeps both ambition and unease conveniently in view.
