Arakawa Under the Bridge

Shaft produced this surreal romantic comedy about a debt-averse young man who joins an eccentric riverside community after being rescued by Nino.

Synopsis
The Anime Lad

Kou Ichinomiya has been raised never to owe anyone. After Nino saves him from the Arakawa River, she asks him to help her experience love. Kou moves into the community beneath the bridge, where a kappa claims municipal authority and eccentricity appears to be a residency requirement.

Super Eyepatch Fox

Never owe anyone. Get rescued by Nino. Repay the debt by helping her experience love beneath a bridge. Kou enters a riverside settlement filled with residents whose identities make his rigid view of normal society increasingly difficult to maintain. No familiar social rules remain safely intact.

Gigguku

Kou builds his identity around owing nobody, so one river rescue traps him in the largest emotional obligation possible. Nino asks for love, then introduces him to a bridge community where a kappa can be mayor without stopping the conversation. Every resident attacks his idea of normal from another angle.

Father's Basement

Surreal comedy can mistake a strange character for a finished joke, and this community supplies plenty of opportunities. Kou's debt rule gives the nonsense structure. He wants every exchange settled and measurable, while Nino's request cannot be handled like an invoice. The joke begins before any resident needs a speech.
