Mahou shoujo means “magical girl,” usually a young heroine who transforms and uses supernatural powers against trouble. The form began with magical heroines in the 1960s, then Sailor Moon helped team battles boom in the 1990s. Cardcaptor Sakura and Puella Magi Madoka Magica show its enormous tonal range.
