Synopsis

The Anime Lad

An honor student finds a notebook that kills anyone whose name is written in it, and his first big idea is to empty the world's prisons permanently. A detective who is also the world's strangest man decides to stop him. What follows is two geniuses lying to each other in increasingly elaborate ways, one of them while eating cake. Somehow it's the tensest show of its decade.

Super Eyepatch Fox

A notebook falls out of the sky. Write a name, that person dies. The smartest student in Japan picks it up and starts executing criminals. The world's best detective takes the case. Neither knows the other's face. Both are certain they'll win. One of them is wrong.

Gigguku

Two certified geniuses playing mind chess with the highest stakes possible. Every episode baits the next one so hard that I finished this in two sittings, and the second was an accident. The main character is doing villain things from minute one and you still catch yourself rooting for him, then feeling weird about it, which is the whole point. Twenty years old and the tension has not aged a day.

Father's Basement

I assumed this was teenage edgelord bait, and to be fair, it is, that's the trick. The show hands its protagonist godlike power, watches his ego curdle, and invites you to enjoy the ride while judging yourself for it. The detective opposite him is the best character in the show, a sugar-addicted insomniac who's three moves ahead of everyone. It loses altitude in the back half, everyone will tell you the same. What comes before is untouchable.

Light Yagami is a genius high school student who is about to learn about life through a book of death. When a bored shinigami, a God of Death, named Ryuk drops a black notepad called a Death Note, Light receives power over life and death with the stroke of a pen.

What defines it

Light is compelling because intelligence and certainty make his corruption feel active rather than accidental. The series lets viewers enjoy each audacious countermove while steadily exposing what happens when one person treats private judgment as absolute law.
